HOW MUCH OF ME?

Non fiction

© 2002

How much of you is there in your work? Is it autobiographical?

When asked for advice on how or what to write, most seasoned authors tell the newcomer to "write what you know about." Simple stated ... or asked: What do any of us know the most about?

Answering those initial two questions, these points come to mind: what I studied in school, what I like and have read, or what subjects have I researched? Those are true, but they are the superficial level ... the more primal level is internal, me. All the rest are but a mere part of me. For I am the sum total of all my experiences and knowledge. What I know is me. So, what will I write about? I'll write about me.

Yes, I'll attempt to cover my tracks--to hide the facts with research and characterization, but I think self will out. I'll do my best to lead the reader astray, to obliterate, obfuscate and obviate the truth (don't'ya just love rhyming alliteration?).

I also believe that the author, consciously or subconsciously, is strewn over, into, beyond and under the written word. Like a battle field, there will be body parts strewn over shell plowed ground, there will be guts and brains dangling from the stark, seared branches of shattered trees.

There will be tear stains on the original draft when the words hold meaning. There will be a chorus of laughter when a passage strikes a resonant humor chord. Whether I am consciously aware of why the words flow, or where they come from--they are me. I write about what I know--and I am the one I know.
